Echoing everything else said in here, separate is always better just in case something happens. You'll only have to replace one device instead of two.

Since you're buying now, go ahead and cop something that's as forward compatible as possible. Get a dual band router with wireless AC and you should be good. As far as the modem, grab something that's DOCSIS 3.0 compatible. The former gets you better internal (local) network speeds and the latter allows you to get higher tier (faster) Internet speeds if you're willing to pay for it from your provider.


I have a Zoom 5348J modem and Asus AC87U router that's working great.

If the coaxial cable is running to your house you don't need a tech to come out

Got the outlet right in my room too...

Would be nice to be having my own internet without my roommates not knowing :lolbron:, don't wanna have to heart feelings and turn em down when they ask for pay for the password to use my shyt.

Can't be having no leechers on my shyt,when I need all the bandwith I can get to stream these NBA games :wow:

If they're not tech heads, you can even set your router up to not broadcast your SSID (network name) and no one will ever know :smugfavre:
