Trade-ins can always be used by dealerships to hide profit margins. Oh, we will take your trade-in for $5000, that's $1000 over blue book. Don't you feel good? Well, what they don't do is go lower on the price. So if you have a $35,000 sticker price, they will take off $5,000 off that, not the invoice price. Invoice price is what you really want to get close to. If you have more cash down, then you can bargain down from that.Trade-ins are almost like giving your car away for free.
