When IWW dropped it WAS a disappointment to many because of the sharp detour in beats and subject matter. Bring in the Escobar persona and it's very different to Illmatic.
I am sorry but before today I have never in my many conversations about hip hop throughout the wide number of people I have talked to about it, from people who liked west coast music to people who like the down south sound to people who were mainstream heard anybody say anything bad about that album. as a matter of fact nas was always considered one of the few artist to have back to back classics. Yea it was different, it was supposed to be and what is this you are saying about the subject matter and the beats? :what: you know what just tell me this aside from illmatic which nas album was better than that one?

I never said it was BAD I said people were disappointed with it AND THEY WERE. People didn't expect him to come with beats that sampled Sting and Eurythmics. They didn't expect ONE Premo joint and a bunch of Trackmasters. I've heard it said many times AND I remember it cos I was there. I was too young to really listen to Illmatic but the consensus I felt and heard at the time was :mindblown: where is Peter Rock where is Large Professor? Why is he making songs with Lauryn Hill? I don't think there was any doubt that the skills were still there or even elevated but people were disappointed because they expected another Illmatic

SAN ANTONIO SPURS NY DIVISION
When the singles came out NYC was like :bryan:

Jada and Lloyd Banks received hype the levels of which I haven't seen since.

Speaking of Banks, we thought NY was in good hands with him and then he dropped Hunger For More

I remember when nikkas rushed to the music shop on 149th to cop that 1st jada joint...

I was like 13...In retrospect I thought the album was average, now that im older,it was really disappointing...Especially when he had a banger like we gon make it...

nikkas were really waiting for that kiss along with beanie second joint.which was disappointing too imo

Decatur where its greater
Lupe's Food and Liquor II.

:lupe:
:whoa: FL2 was a breath of fresh air imo after the disaster called Lasers.

FFF, ITAL, bytch Bad , Around My Way, Hood Now

I think FL2 was pretty solid. Only way you were disappointed in FL2 is if you were expecting more Laser bullshyt

edit: This dude @ISOMELO said GRDT was disappointing :dwillhuh:. I can somewhat cosign WTT (although that tour was the GOAT), and I agree The Warm Up & FNL >> Sideline Story.

The Warm Up today is still one of my favorite mixtapes ever.

cant shake it bruh, i want to like it, i enjoy it

but to this day all songs i can bump is In California, It Might Sound Crazy, Initiated, OG, Playa Partners, Gang Banging ass criminal

the rest were average

its been a while since ive bumped it tho, but i remember being mad disappointed

Dam bruh! Only track i don't like is Thank God I'm Alive, the rest goes. That album has never left my rotation.

That aside, I'm just trying to understand how you could view this as one of the most disappointing albums ever. I'm assuming your expectations are from Dogg Food..... we expected Daz to bring some top tier production and nice flow and Kurupt was one of the nicest MC's in the game to me. Plus, Kurupt killed pretty much every feature verse he had.

Daz delivered. Kurupt dropped Kuruption:sadcam:....it was fukkin awful. It made me question my views about him as an MC and that hurt. I'd say my most disappointing album ever, without question. Hell, Snoop dropped Doggfather. RRG pisses on both them albums breh, this is why i'm struggling to understand.

I think most people would have expected more from Snoop and Kurupt than Daz. Did you like Kuruption or Doggfather better than RRG??

I'll never understand the hate for IWW...I guess I would need that "You had to be there" context to understand. But still...most of the reasons I see nikkas state ist hat it was "different" than Illmatic. Different isn't bad.

Man I never heard anyone in real life say that It Was Written was wack or a disappointment. See where I'm from, around the time Illmatic was out I don't remember anyone in my hood really playing that album. It was all about "36 Chambers" and "Ready To Die" around that time. But when It Was Written came out, that's when I noticed that EVERYBODY was fukkin wit Nas!!! That's all I mostly heard playin out of cars in the summer of '96! That's the album that got me into Nas, i actually didn't hear all of Illmatic until years later. The beats were on point and lyrically it was prime Nas on that album!

I know they get tons of hate on here but ill say slaughterhouse welcome to our house.

All four emcees were some of my favorites, specifically crooked i and budden. So when they formed i was exstatic.

The first album i thought was dope, an 8/10.

When they signed to shady i thought it was a perfect fit.

Then when they absolutely murdered the bet cyphers i couldnt wait.

Then they releases my life. My hype died.

Then i hear the album. Trash. Eminem ruined that album. He literally brought all of his worst traits and none of his good ones. The only person to drop quality verses was crook. The other three had the worst verses of their careers. Eminem co produced and mixed almost every song. So even if it started as a dope beat eminem completely ruined it.

Whats funny is the free mixtape had some of the best material theyve ever released.

First of all, great thread, very interesting debate.

Man, I'll need to take some time to really reflect on this but I was brutally dissapointed by The Godfathers LP by Kool G Rap and Necro, I was expecting all sorts of epic from that record and it really came off as a Necro ft. G Rap project with little to no chemistry between the two artists and an inability of G Rap to shine on the beats which for the most part were very uninspired and poorly adapted to KGR.

I'll also say that I had huge expectations for Uncontrolled Substance by Rebel INS and Immobilarity by Raekwon and was extremely dissapointed by those 2, especially the later.

Of course every Nas and Snoop LP after Illmatic and Doggystyle have never been to my liking, but to call IWW the most dissapointing hiphop LP of all time is in my opinion overeaching. Personally, I've just stopped expecting any project worth listening to from Nas but always give his music a chance in the hopes that he'll come with some magic that will resonate with me, but he's simply no longer an artist that creates music that I find exciting. His music is just flat out boring to my ear.

Off the top real quick, Blackout 2 by Red and Meth was also brutally dissapointing after the fire they brought the first time around.
