What is the point of slapping ppls butts in sports

Where did this come from and why was this started. As a youngin it always made me and when I saw Aikman slapping Emmitt in the butt after he had a nice run.

I remember playing little league football/basketball and coming out of the game walking past the coach and him saying "Good job" followed by a pat on the butt. I always turned around like . What's wrong with moving that pat 12 inches higher
