Trap wasn't considered a sound until after 2010 when the cacs gentrified the term after Flockaveli. After what Waka and Lex Luger did with the instrumentation and 808s

It evolved. I've had this discussion many times on here. Trap was simply a word that referred to where the place where hustlers made their money and the activities associated with it. It was a touchstone for rappers where it was referenced here and there notably by Ghetto Mafia, OutKast, Ball & G, and even E-40 and Jay Z.

Then along came T.I. who combined elements of Slim Calhoun and Cool Breeze into his style and expanded on what a Trap actually was. Toomp was inspired by Master P's "Break Em Off Somethin" featuring UGK which spawned the sound of T.I.'s "Dope Boyz". From there T.I. and Toomp forged a sound that won over the streets, which birthed T.I.'s Trap Muzik. Trap Muzik was the mainstream introduction to trap sonically and content wise.

Then came Jeezy with Trap or Die and ultimately TM101, which was an evolution of the style and a more simplistic breakdown of what a trap actually was.

Along came Lex Luger and trap simply became a sound associated with stuttering, rolling hi hats, and triplet drums. Then the Migos added the triplet flow inspired by Three Six Mafia and Bone. And the rest is Hip Hop history.

Them cacs mainstreamed the term & added the likes of “playboi carti & Travis Scott” which isn’t traditional trap music.


Their term for it is any rap song wit a 808 that has no type of lyrical content towards it, which blands it out to 90% of hip hop in their eyes.


The ORIGINAL form for trap would be more specific. 808’s obviously, but the content of the music is more about hustling & stunting.

I would say it started with either 8Ball & MJG or UGK. Pocket Fulla Stones probably the first trap song alot of southern trap artist would say influenced them.

So obviously T.I, Jeezy, UGK, Scarface, Gucci Mane, Dolph, BankRoll Fresh, Lil Baby, etc.
