Can't speak for the 'trendy' ones but for those that really do it it has to do with inner pain, shame and other things. Sometimes they're trying to punish themselves or sometimes they want to feel a physical manifestation of their emotional pain. Its a real issue that usually stems from a history of neglect and abuse and it really ain't no joke

I've dated a lot of girls who do this. It comes from the emo, hardcore, and indie rock scene. They're called scene kids. Most have a lot emotional issues man. They're all borderline suicidal. They like pain they can control. That's the simple answer.

If anyone ever feels like hurting themselves please talk to someone. Cutting is very dangerous and can become a coping mechanism or addiction if gone untreated.

- I Care

Totally not true. People outside the emo/scene culture cut themselves. Do you even know what indie rock is :heh:? That has nothing to do with cutting.
People who cut aren't suicidal, otherwise they would, well, cut their wrists. Most of the time it's a call for help or attention.

It sounds cliche

but they want the pain they feel on the outside to balance the pain the feel on the "inside". the two don't coincide do they try to balance it out.

People do it in a number of ways. Pick fights, substance abuse, cutting, it's all the same thing. Self Punishment.

This too

No, I like to use terms I don't understand to seem cool. It's internet man. I want your approval so bad I can't help stretching the truth.

Settle down, doggy. Of course people outside the scene do it. But in the late 90 to about 05 those scenes had a lot of cutters. It was a part of the scene. Anyway this is a trivial argument. We actually agree with each other. For someone who's seems smart you missed the most important part of my post. These people need help.

That's anecdotal and that's a small sample size. Obviously those girls don't represent the millions of people who self harm and if you think they do then you're stereotyping

nikka wtf are you talking about? Did I say that applied to all cutters?

Are you a cutter or something?

It's a response to an emotional struggle. Inflicting pain somewhere else takes the mind's attention off the other pain they are feeling. Whether it's coping with loss, stress, guilt, rejection, etc. they're just trying to feel something other than that dominant negative emotion.

I'm sure some are attention whores but if they're willing to resort to inflicting physical harm to your body for that attention, then "attention seeking" seems like a symptom to me rather than the problem. They are still reacting to deep-seated emotional issues that cause them to go such extreme measures. What circumstances led them to desiring attention in this way as opposed to some other, less painful way? What need do they have that's not being fulfilled? Why does garnering sympathy, fear, and alarm from their friends and family satisfy them? I think it's not really fair to just say they're "seeking attention" and leave it at that, as if that need for attention isn't driven by some real emotional turmoil
