as my boy Arcvian can attest, many years ago in the 90s i used to compete locally in tournament play back when nacmo had an arcade here in the bay area (san jose) and golfland in sunnyvale was where all the pros played.
on an international level every country produces, its not just asians, now when it comes to strategy and MMOs they play those games and televise them on tv, ill never forget being in japan when this was going on,
keep in mind, I WATCHED this shyt like 'OMFG" i never wanted to play tetris ever again. i happen to be in akhiabara that day and there was a gang of people and press watching this on a giant screen. if payed tourneys were the norm here in every county like in japan/korea alot more would play, for fighting games, it is the norm, so you see alot of guys prepping for EVO etc.
i stopped competing after i joined the service, the last tourney i competed in was a tekken 6 tourney in which i made it to an online semi final nationwide, had i won my last two matches, the final was in san francisco,
i was up 3 matches 1 one on this dude and dropped the last two on some houston oilers shyt.
