What makes Cacklemore different than the flood of white underground acts of the late 90's/early 00's

Around the late 90's and the early part of this century, you saw a bunch of white mostly suburban hipster type rappers flood the independent scene and kinda turn it into :mjpls: status. Anticon, Slug and Rhyme Sayers, etc...I can't remember half of their names. That whiting out of the underground scene contributed a lot to its dying down. Traditional "backpackers" thought the music was corny and didn't want to go to shows where the whole audience and the artists look like comic book store employees.

But Cacklemore doesn't seem any different from any of them. And he's old as fukk...he could've came out around that time. Now he's blowing up. Why not Sole or Madchild or Slug or any of the other 1,000 former whiggers who turned into faux artsy intellectual rappers?

I don't know if this is self-explanatory or not but the timing and the songs :manny:
I guess. If Cacklemore came out in 1999, his peak would've been getting a few thousand napster downloads and performing in hipster hole in the walls in San Francisco. And one of those nobody white indie rappers from back then came out now, they could maybe be winning VMAs.

macklemore has been around for a hot minuet though. I first heard of him like 4 years ago but he's probably been around for even longer.

Anyway to answer your question, he just got his big break at the right time. simple.

Is it really that baffling? He made two catchy singles.

^^^^Yeah he's coming out during a time when the game is starting to be run by "artsy hipsters". This is also THE BEST time in music to be an independent artist, plus his production is more Pop than Hip-Hop IMO.:yeshrug:

I don't necessarily think Macklemore is comparable to those underground rappers of the Def Jux era, he doesn't really fit that lane... He's one of the main artists out the Seattle hip-hop scene. Came out with Thrift Shop and it slowly blew up, then he's white which gives him more star potential and he also had Wing$ to translate over to the NBA crowd during the finals and Same Love during this "Gay Rights" era. All those songs plus "Can't Hold Us" just contributes to an endless stream of singles that's getting him tons of fans OUTSIDE of hip-hop along within hip-hop (although most of the community seems to hate him).

with Kendrick on top, the fukkin game is wide open... its like the NBA where that fakket Dwight is the best "big man" its open season on the rim...
:wow:
West Coast got em so salty
:wow:

On topic :
Macklemore I think is the product
of perfect timing and safe content.
:yeshrug:

He doesn't necessarily rap his @ss off like
Kendrick or Lupe.
He doesn't make challenging music like
KA or Death Grips.
He doesn't even really target a "Black" market
either.
College Radio >>>>>>
That young white money :wow:
You can tell who he set out to reach with this
album and it's working.

That's because he bites the fukk out of Slug @VictorVonDoom
The only person comparable with the biting at the moment
is Hopsin and his boy Jarren Benton.

He reminds me a lot of some of those Anticon dudes, Sage Francis, Slug, etc...especially Slug. But yeah I guess he came at the right time and he crossed over. A lot of those other white underground rappers were too caught up in being underground and trying to embody hip-hop to try and cross over.
