in the 90's angst and cynicism were in..things got darker and more introspective. this was reflected in music, film, fashion, literature, etc. but why?

I mean the '00s, even with the tragedies of that decade weren't that cynical, and the '80s seem to have been the decade of optimism despite the nation just suffering through Vietnam and it's after effects, Watergate, Jimmy Carter's Malaise, the rebirth of the Cold War under Carter/Reagan, and the economic disparity caused by Reagan's "Trickle-Down" economics.

You'd think the '90s would've been a period of optimism--The Cold War was finally over and thus the threat of nuclear war seemed pretty much finished, a new generation was in power, there was economic prosperity...So why the cynicism?

:what:

Because ppl still CARED back then about right/wrong....not just about money as it is these days.

And the cynicism was winding up with the situation we have now.

it was a counterculture against the over the top decadence, glitz and glamor of the 80s...it was the cool thing in the 90s to do the exact opposite, whether it was thru fashion, music, movies, books, whatever....

but why don't we have this now? I feel like we're back in the 80's mode of soulless escapism

but why don't we have this now? I feel like we're back in the 80's mode of soulless escapism

we do have it, nikkas today dress the exact opposite that they did in the 90s, the music is the exact opposite in terms of sound and mood....all the music today is about being happy and twerking in the club instead of crying alone in the rain or being suicidal like most of the 90s music...

and like another person pointed out, the transition between the 80s and 90s was a rough one, so it reflected in our culture at the time...

the only reason the 90s have any reverence these days is because all of the kids who grew up in the 90s are the ones that pop culture is targeted to now...we're the 18-25 year old demographic that decides trends and fads and we still have a soft spot for the 90s piff we grew up on so we aint letting it die so easily

pop culture is a cycle though, a couple more years everyone is gonna be rocking baggy ass cross colours jumpsuits and shyt again...

The 2000s doesn't feel like 80s or 90s to me.

This generation doesn't know what it wants to be.

There will be no extreme nostalgic value for the 2000s like it was for the 70s or 80s.

I like those VH1 I love the 70s/80s specials, didn't really enjoy the one about the 90s. The one for the 2000s also sucked.

I won't be too excited to reminisce over what happened in the 2000s with the way the world is right now except something crazy happens in the future like people in the world start living like the Jetsons or something.

Everything is about money now and showing off. Nobody is really happy if you ask me. This constant pursuit of happiness nonsense is all fake to me.

I'm not really amazed about the internet and cell phone culture anymore, I feel we can do more.

They have brought a lot of good things like making the world smaller and smaller but also ruined a lot of things with tmz, and the rest of the media crap.

Celebrity mystique is completely gone right now with social media like twitter.

I don't even take most of these celebs seriously anymore, they are all a joke in my eyes. I have lost respect for a lot of them cos of the internet.
