@Playa With Tha Passport where you messed up is that College Dropout has more standout tracks than those 3 songs, but other than that I share the same sentiments about it breh.

It's got enough classic Ye tracks to earn praise but some of the beats and songs on CD are just stale as fukk in 2015.

Compare it to a couple other early 2000s albums with the same type of soul sample sound (some which Ye had a hand in) College Dropout sounds average in comparison and ain't nearly as fresh.

Examples: Supreme Clientele, The Blueprint

I dont get it

People calling it a classic really?

Slow jamz
All falls down
Jesus walks
Really are the only songs that stood the test of time

And that just happened to be his 3 singles off the album , so i guess he did a great job when it comes to that

Outside of when it first came out iv never heard anyone bump it

This is not classic material at all

Why do people call it that ?
It spoke to black kids who came from the burbs and rejected a lot of the pseudo masculinity that comes from growing up hard. He was talking about living a normal mans life in a time when gangsta rap was at its zenith.

OP just curious and no disrespect, but did you hear college dropout when it first dropped? How old were you then?

Frankly i wouldnt say its Kanye's best album but its a classic especially in the context of what was going on when it first dropped. It was different and interesting for the time and him having a range of co-signs from so many different artists made it more so.

I saw RD mentioned. i was "of age" and remember RD dropping and it wasnt even on a lot of ppl's radars. There were other albums much more hyped that dont even get mentioned now that i was in a bigger hurry to cop. JayZ was more of a "survivor" of that era than a shaper of it

He did what few mainstream artists Had done in rap to that point. He spoke to the average dude but not one who glorified the streets or used it as a measure of a mans worth at a time when being tough was all that mattered.

He was insecure and honest and transparent. He had emotions and shared his flaws.

Even on late registration when he says "they nick named him k rock so they'd leave me alone" ...that shyt speaks to the average dude who has his own struggles but doesn't pretend to have always been "that guy"

Ye fought a lot of social stigma coming up too.

Even his fashion sense of wearing properly fitted clothes and not trying to speak with a fake accent transcended the paradigms of rap music and seeded a lot of alternative black rap artists who could identify with the music through their own lives without having to compare themselves to street tales or trying to show off. Every artist since Kanye has been influenced by him.

Annnnnnnnd sonically his sound was THE shyt. That sample laced shyt was simply THE go to sound at the moment. It was soulful, socially conscious, and totally black without being corny or preachy. It was truly a contextual classic.

@Playa With Tha Passport you know how j cole sounds now? That's like 1/10th of what Kanye was.

He set the standard for a producer and artist. Others have tried and failed to succeed at both.

This. And people that maybe couldnt relate to kanye's content were fukkin with it off the strength of Rockafella. It wasnt that long ago, but when someone got signed then and you were already fukkin with the label/crew, the new addition was at least worth checking out. Now i feel like new additions to existing teams are either well established independently and are nothing new, or are weed carrying obligation co-signs that have no business rapping. Early 00s were pretty blah IMO, kanye was definitely a breath of fresh air

Exactly. 15 years ago the game was yearning for someone like Kanye
