I updated my resume on Monster.comand Dice.com recentlly and been getting calls from random recruiters asking for what im looking for in term of where i wanna be and salary ranges. I got to a point where i was being contacted by 5 of these mofos per day either by phone or email.

Mind these dont work form the companies they would be recruiting for. Some arent even working for a company that is contracted with the end/client company. They just want to get a feel for what you know and are looking for so they could refer the companies that may be looking for talent to you and vice versa if said hiring company is willing to pay them a commission. Remember there are 3 types of recruiters from what i noticed

  1. Works for company X and is looking for talent to work for company X.
  2. Works for Company X but company X is under contract to acquire talent for company Y
  3. Works for Company X and is NOT contracted by other companies but instead just looking for talent to have in their contacts so that they can research companies looking for talent and then link the talent to the company
What has your experience been so far? I have worked with both type 1 and type 2 in the past and have lead me to actual interviews with companies and even got hired by some. Im not sure i trust type 3 yet.

15 years experience in the SW Dev field. My last 2 jobs were found by 1 & 2. Don't trust #3. They do this in order to get to #2 level. "We have x number of contacts with skill level y". They will harrass you incessantly in order to keep you are part of their "available" candidates.
Frankly #1, #2 and LinkedIN are how jobs are found nowadays.

Recruiters are legit, being a front end developer, from the hood of the bronx, not going to a IVY league school and being black.

I would not be working in advertising making 40/hr if it wasn't for putting my resume on monster and dice when I graduated.
They are legit breh, you have to go in , and they have to meet you.
But they work at doing what they say they are going to do, they look for work for you. And none of the money comes out of your pocket, they get paid from the employer when you get hired or freelance there.

#3 is legit, thats how I got most of my jobs.
Most corporations don't hire directly, they use a staffing agency to find talent for them. Because they get 5000 resumes a day, they would prefer to use a trusted staffing agency to get the talent for them. They work.
I found my first full time job from a agency like that, I was at the movie theathers making out with a girl, and they called my cell a week after I met them and told me they found a gig for me. Contract to perm.

Putting your resume on DICE will have you getting 20-30 phone calls a day man
It's flattering but I say about 80% of them are for bullshyt you don't want, in places like Iowa or Utah, or stuff you not qualified for
That being said I got my last three jobs thru random recruiters, they work. It's just a pain in the ass shifting thru the real ones and the frauds

Unless it is a recruiter for the actual company itself you should take anything they say or offer with a grain of salt...

Not saying it won't lead to jobs but you shouldn't get a call from the Robert Half Technologies of the world and be all geeked and think you about to get a job...

To put it in perspective I still get calls about being a netbackup admin...I haven't done that in 8 years...

Gotten all my jobs thru 1 & 2.

A little different for me because I work in the HR function, so they know that I know that they can't bullshyt me w salary numbers, fancy job titles, or exaggerated job requirements.

LinkedIn is the new wave, but it's hard to ignore recruiters that hit you up on there

#1 is how I got my current job. They found me on careerbuilder. I did not think a fortune 100 company would have recruiters searching that site, but they are. I still get calls and emails from my linked in profile about different IT jobs. I say take the calls and check out the opportunity. You never know what it might lead to.

They get paid if you get hired off their referal. They're thirsty as fukk too. Let them work for you, but keep in mind you got a "friend" for life. They'll be calling you up every few months just to see how things are going. That's y I keep a landline at home for business.
