What TO YOU is being good in the ring?

Let's go back to 2000...this was the year the Net people lorded Cripple H as some stand out. He worked with excellent names all year but he got the most credit until retrospect and reality brought that all full circle. He didn't outwork anyone...he didn't carry anyone. Was he better than Benoit, Angle, Jericho, or Rocky? of course not. He kept going over a lot and that was given a lot of credit.

Good in the ring is storytelling and selling the right way. Benoit was selling his ASS off in MITB to set Edge up for that big victory....Angle vs Michaels at WM 21? Yuck. Spots everywhere and no selling like a motherfukker at the end.

The Rock is one of a kind because he always has the crowd deep into every move he does. And he sells on the beatdowns to get that crowd invested for the comebacks..he's always been great at that.

Storytelling for the most part. I mean a spotfest is fine but I don't like it in a major storyline, like most Cena and Taker matches the past few years.

andre the giant is a prime example. by today's standards, smark idiots would say he couldn't wrestle.

someone who can work the crowd and have them in the palm of their hand, who can suspend my disbelief and make me enjoy the show. someone who can work a match well from the opening holds to the high spots. someone who has good match timing. a wrestler who can make a match look like a game of chess in a sense. someone who can cleverly sell. for example i saw a new japan match where someone was getting their knee worked and they continuously sold it. it affected their ability to hit a finisher and run the ropes.

The terms "storytelling" and "selling" sometimes pisses me off cuz thats used in the E too much and they act like every match there is a "storytelling" match while any match anywhere else isnt and is just a spotfest.

Its like in their heads (and possibly the fans too) a Titus vs Stardust match is a story telling match but say Son's of Havoc/Angenico/Iveless vs The Crew isnt and is just a spotfest.

Now granted, I do know and get that there are fantastic spots that happen in the latter match..... but that dont make it a spot fest. There is a lot of emotion, psychology, suspense, drama, humor, and etc in those matches that really keep you on the edge of your seats.

To me a spot fest is them E matches where week in and out cats pretty much perform the exact same spots and the exact same moments with very little variation. Or them Main Event tag matches where it always comes down to that break down after that hot tag where everyone just start spamming moves getting they shyt off till there is one man standing.

  • Specifically pain, frustration, joy, excitement, determination, anger, and fear.
• Being able to make a match with vast majority of wrestlers work and entertain.
• Being able to draw a crowd and/or entertain a crowd with the above abilities.
• Have a performance convincing enough that the crowd can either believe what is going on physically, or suspend disbelief accordingly.

A mix of styles. HBK and Seth Rollins can be high flyers, technical wrestlers, pull off impressive power moves, etc. Good selling and the ability to get people emotionally invested in the match.

Being able to tell a story, being able to build drama and suspense and being able to move the crowd. Also being able to build off of the match in terms of future storylines and future matches. Style doesn't really matter that much. Foley in his prime was completely different from, say, Seth Rollins, but they're both great workers.

EDIT: The whole Tana/Okada saga is a good example. There were multiple callbacks to previous matches and the tricks and tactics used in those matches.
