There was no direction and a lack of cohesiveness in the producing. Jay just wanted to fit in as much as possible even though he didn't have much to contribute. None of the beats complimented or bridged into one another. It sounded more like Jay-Z on shuffle than a Jay-Z album. I guess that's what happens when you don't record most of the songs within a small timeframe of sessions.
In reality, a song like SomewhereInAmerica should be nowhere near a song like fukkWithMeYouKnowIGotIt on the same album... Stylistically they just don't match.
Beats like Oceans and Part II are outdated as all hell too, I understand that Part II was a 90's/early 2000's throwback but in no way was that shyt appealing. Good songs, just outdated. Who's still using those snares on Oceans in 2013
It's a shame though because there's a good 12 or so songs that could have made a classic Jay album. Off the top there was only a couple real doodoo tracks
