Probably Final Fantasy 8. I had tried 7 but I didnt get it at the time ('88 baby, I was too dumb to get past the scorpion boss
), then when 8 dropped I saw a friend playing it and was intrigued.
I grew up on Mario and Sonic, and with a Genesis instead of an SNES I really only knew arcade style games. Playing a game with a story like that was kinda deep at the time. Instead of rescuing the princess, we formed a rebel squad to try and assassinate the sorceress... I was like holy shyt, and coupled with the music it had me hype on some militant shyt
And its disc 1 of 4!
A little different than taking gaming seriously, but it showed me games could be more than just high scores and shyt.
In terms of taking games SERIOUSLY, its really not for me. Ill always be a casual gamer. Watching pro Street Fighter dudes, I respect that, and enjoy watching high level play but I dont wanna work that hard for such a little reward.
