simple answer: bowe didn't want it with lennox...literally throwing the wbc belt in the garbage when lennox was the number 1 contender all but solidified it

not mad at the bowe-holyfield fights though...they were great

The answers above are bullshyt. The truth is that Bowe made more of an effort to make the fight happen than Lennox.3 different times.

1) People want to talk about Bowe dropping the belt, but that's because the crooked ass WBC (who didn't like Bowe and his management) was threatening to strip him and give it to Lewis. Lennox knew this and priced himself out of the fight knowing he would get the belt either way.

2) After Bowe got stripped he offered Lennox a unification fight (Bowe still had the IBF, WBA, & Ring Belts) to which Lewis declined and opted to fight Frank Bruno & Tommy Morrison instead

3) Bowe and Lennox had agreed to fight in 95 in a unification fight (Bowe had the WBO belt at the time), only for the fight to go up in smoke when Lennox got KO'ed by Oliver McCall. Even after that Bowe still offered the fight to Lennox, but Lennox decline because he wanted stay in the good graces of the WBC. So instead of fighting for another organization's belt, he decided to work his way up the WBC ladder again and regain their belt.

Bowe was never afraid of Lennox. The fight didn't happen because of politics. Stop believing all the bullshyt spewed out

There was a lot of politics behind this never happening. Bowe was not scared of Lennox Lewis. He was mad about what happened in the Olympics and kept that with him his entire career.

The initial 90/10 split that Newman/Bowe offered Lewis was ridiculous though...but they eventually got down to 75/25...which is the same split Bowe accepted to fight Holyfield as a challenger for the undisputed title.

In those days...you don't turn down a 75/25 split as a challenger for the undisputed Heavyweight title...would've been far & away a career high payday for Lewis, and a shot at the most coveted crown in all of sports...you gotta jump on that...Bowe did, for the exact same split against Holyfield.

I always figured it was Bowe/Newman getting a great deal from HBO and felt they could make millions taking on easier opponents and milking it for all it was worth before facing a tougher task in Lewis.

Losing to Holyfield in the rematch was a pretty big upset, Bowe probably underestimated him judging by his waistline. HBO paid Bowe/Newman millions earlier facing overmatched opponents like Dokes and Ferguson. He wasn't the first guy that HBO paid big millions to in a multi-fight contract, and then got criticized for "exploiting" that contract to take low risk fights.

Bowe and his team most likely knew Lewis was a risk, in addition to their Olympic fight, Lewis was a big puncher and Bowe didn't face a lot of big punchers. His opposition overall was good, but he didn't face too many big punchers.

Newman also had beef with Jose Suluaman and the WBC. I once read some details about the politics behind this fight never materializing and it was giving me a headache reading about all the bullshyt.

People knocked Bowe for looking disinterested and out of it when he lost to Lewis in the Olympics...I don't know what was going on in his head but I think it's worth mentioning that his brother was in the hospital dying of AIDS and his sister had been bludgeoned to death by a crack addict when she went to pick up her welfare check. I could understand if he wasn't at his best mentally. Although Bowe didn't train like he should have, he had a lot of heart once he entered the ring. He showed too much heart in the 2nd Golota match, that fight was brutal. I remember watching it live and worrying that Bowe would die in the ring. It was that bad.
