What Went Wrong With Suga Free?

Suga Frees first album is a personal classic. Not one weak song. Varied subjects everything about the album is perfect. DJ Quiks production is amazing. Just talking skills Frees doing all kind of gymnastics with an authentic flow. Maybe not super lyrical but everything else is crazy. People talk about how Young Thug is so innovative but Suga Free was unlocking all those flows in 97. Every song he's giving you game and making you laugh at the same time.

What happened between Street Gospel and The New Testament? Why did it take so long between albums and what made his skills fall off so much after? He still has good songs and features but you have to dig for them. I thought he was going to come back crazy after I heard him on Schoolboy Qs album.

However, the title of his first album Street Gospel . . . made it look like it was some sort of Christian rap album . . not good marketing

Despite his character, despite his "skill" (is that quantifiable?) . . . despite the great production - his direction is niche and won't appeal to everybody - and too many people it's just downright offensive

On the surface Street Gospel sounds like a bunch of misgony but if you spend time with the album it's actually a real depressing story about what how much damage a woman can do to a man. It makes sense if you listen to Suga Free talk about why he became a pimp.

These lyrics sum up the album to me.
