The problem with healthcare in this country is people that go to med school and post grad expect to might high six figures because that's what it costs to get the education.

Data are for the U.S.

  • Per capita national health expenditures: $9,523 (2014)
  • Total national health expenditures: $3.0 trillion (2014)
  • Total national health expenditures as a percent of Gross Domestic Product: 17.5% (2014)
Source: Health, United States, 2015, table 93 [PDF - 9.8 MB]

  • Percent of national health expenditures for hospital care: 32.1% (2014)
  • Percent of national health expenditures for nursing care facilities and continuing care retirement communities: 5.1% (2014)
  • Percent of national health expenditures for physician and clinical services: 19.9% (2014)
  • Percent of national health expenditures for prescription drugs: 9.8% (2014)
Source: Health, United States, 2015, table 94 [PDF - 9.8 MB]

Everything is profit driven.

Fee for service payment system was endorsed by Conservative Democrats, Republicans, and the AMA :yeshrug:

Something as simple as a prescription drug which costs little to make can rise in price at a profit of 1000%.

You have to account for the costs of research and development. Much higher failure rate than success rate when developing drugs. Also it takes approximately 9-11 years to take it from the lab, to trial, to the consumer, so pharma companies try to recoup R&D losses on the back end or ensure that they hold the patent rights to ensure exclusivity. The name of the pharma game is exclusivity.

Healthcare and capitalism don't mix.

Whole reason democrats have been pursuing national health insurance since before FDR :manny:

i cs his idea of pushing drugs through approval faster :obama:

Trump’s brief medicines update sends tongues wagging at ‘FDA reform’ promise | FierceBiotech

As the Trump bump for biotech continues to reverberate after he became president-elect on Wednesday, biotech may now have more to celebrate as a new, but lightly detailed, healthcare update is being seen by some as a positive read-through for the industry.

In the latest Healthcare section of Trump’s website, he says his administration will “Advance research and development in healthcare” and more pointedly “Reform the Food and Drug Administration, to put greater focus on the need of patients for new and innovative medical products.”

Some have read this as being a boon for biotech, especially the latter section. Trump and the Republican Party are known for wanting to deregulate as part of their broader political philosophy. Deregulating the agency could in essence help remove barriers to approval.

The FDA too has over the past four years been making an active effort to speed up its processes and get more meds on the market more quickly than ever before, using new systems such as breakthroughs, fast tracks and priority reviews.

What reform will actually mean remains highly vague, but alongside the apparent lack of appetite to push for drug pricing reform from the Party--which will hold control of all the main branches of government next year--these changes have helped continue the rally in shares for the Nasdaq biotech index ($IBB) and the S&P biotech ($XBI), which were both up around 9% on Wednesday and continued to rise by 1.6% and 3.1% respectively yesterday after a dismal October.

From the republican standpoint repealing Obamacare makes 0 sense. They should be grabbing headlines immigration reform or something else

I say this because whatever they change has to be an immediate positive impact on their voters and America or this will tank anything they do going forward

As if we needed any more proof that the GOP doesn't care about anyone outside of the elite.

These dudes have had years to come up with a replacement and they don't even have a name. But they're rushing to destroy a system that millions of people rely on without providing any type of replacement in the near future. Think about that.

The Republicans voted against protections for pre-existing conditions btw. Despite Trump and others saying they'll keep it. How can anyone take anything this man says seriously?
Trump and the Republicans are not even on the same page. Trump doesn't know what the fukk he's talkin about

He wants Obamacare repealed and replaced within a week meanwhile the rank and file Republicans have nothing to put in it's place

Trump is a clown :russ:

That's the thing that has me :mindblown:

They spent 6 years fighting Obama on this yelling for a repeal and they haven't even started up a thought process for a replacement...:wtf:

The BIGGEST problem with Obamacare is they penalized you for not having insurance. They basically forced you to get it even if you didn't need it or wanted it.

If they not gonna have a single payer option you should've be forced to get something you don't want.

The problem with the healthcare system is COST.

At this point its on the republicans. If premiums rise higher than when under Obamacare or people can't afford regular insurance, they will look bad and it will show a clear contrast between parties.

Hopefully Republicans will be pressured into a more affordable approach post Obamacare so they won't look like idiots.

The biggest problems are the high deductibles for Medicare patients, shytty benefits for the middle class, and forced opioid prescribing which is leading to an epidemic in dependency and addiction

I love Obama and hate Obamacare but repealing it will cause chaos
