Dating from 1957 when the award was first presented, passers and rushers have won 56 of 59 MVPs with two players sharing the award in 1997 and 2003. The only non-offensive players to be honored were Taylor, Alan Page and Mark Moseley for special teams.

question came up after listening to ATH podcast and they were speaking on JJ Watt chances to win MVP

I imagine at this point you would have to set some kind of record.. achieve something no one ever has before.. Because if not, the award is essentially the "best QB (or RB if you really dominate)" award at this point
That's why I hate the NFL MVP

It's pretty much sum bullshyt. Just a QB award

Their team would have to at least win their own division.

I don't think any standalone individual record will do it. Team record is the biggest key - winning their division, a few key defensive stops (as a team) late in games as cliff notes for his dominant season + be reliant upon no other player in the league separating themselves from the pack.

Its already been said but have a season that can be considered all time great with a team in double digit wins while being led by a garbage QB (like Fitzpatrick).

Can't happen. There's a reason it hasn't been done in nearly 30 years. It's the running back of the year award or the quarterback of the year award. It took a 2,100 yard season for Peterson to get it too. Other than that, 2007-now its been all quarterbacks. The award is a joke and this in turn makes the offensive player of the year award a joke too. There's a good reason the NBA doesn't have one. The scoring title effectively is. You gotta do a lot of things to win MVP there. If the NFL has just the offensive and defensive player of the year awards, some players greatness would truly be noticed. That's just my opinion.

Def agree with that. Don't even see the point of having both OPOY and MVP when defensive players never win MVP.
