maybe a corner or safety can win it if they get about 10 defensive touchdowns and 4 or 5 return touchdowns with 100+ tackles and 10 forced fumbles and add double digit sacks in there too.

Ohh and they basically have to get the jaguars or the Bucs to the playoffs by themselves while playing defense and offense and special teams.

But they might still lose to Arron rogers.

That's why I hate the NFL MVP

It's pretty much sum bullshyt. Just a QB award
And when you think about it, a QB can't logically be the most valuable player on any given team...Why...?

The position is so DEPENDENT on other positions doing a really good job...The line has to create the pocket, and the receivers need to have hands like glue...

The QB's success is predominantly based on the Offensive Team's success...

Well I think its like that cause this generation thinks scoring is more exciting than defense so the game is more catered to that area. Same way the NBA is more of a guard/wing player driven league. Its to the point where power forwards expanded their game to beyond the post to keep up.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
Dating from 1957 when the award was first presented, passers and rushers have won 56 of 59 MVPs with two players sharing the award in 1997 and 2003. The only non-offensive players to be honored were Taylor, Alan Page and Mark Moseley for special teams.

question came up after listening to ATH podcast and they were speaking on JJ Watt chances to win MVP
strahan broke the sack record and didn't even sniff it.. and it's gonna be impossible for a lineman to get that many ints or tackles

an lb MIGHT get it if he got an insane amount of tackles and broke the record, a lot of ints too, and scored a lot

a db would basically have to do the same, but his tackles would be lower.. then break the int record and scoring record

i saw you gotta score cause if you got as many or even half as many tds as an rb, that'd be amazing

you'd also have to pray every single qb was average to good... no peyton numbers to go up against.. no peterson numbers

like someone said it'd have to be like woodson.. no great offensive player that year.. combined with an insane amount of ints and points

set records, at least 3 game winnings pick 6's, 5 game saving turnovers and a wife he loses to breast cancer during the season.. :to:

and he'd have to play a little qb on the side.

Giving MVP's to quarterbacks is pointless at this point. You should have a pure QB award. Offensive player of the uear & MVP always go to QB's. So many other great players at other positions can't even get recognition. Might as well hand it to arod or peyton if that's the case.

Not gonna happen in this flag football version of the NFL

Could be looked at in the reverse. If a defensive players goes far and beyond his peers and lifts his defense in this era of scoring it should give them even more credit and support for an MVP award...especially if there are a bunch of offensive players (QBs specifically) with ridiculous stats that can't really be separated much.

This is why I think JJ Watt should at least finish in the top 5 out of recognition this year and Id vote for him if his team found a way to make the playoffs. Can't give it to a guy on a losing squad. He is clearly a game-changer to the highest degree and if the Texans somehow scrap their way into the playoffs (unlikely), he deserves the most credit for it.

In general, for an MVP...I look for a player who has the most positive impact on their side of the ball relative to their peers around the league while taking into account the players they have around them on their side of the ball. Then I compare the differential gaps of the two to other contenders and take into account W-L. Thus, right now, I have Rivers in first for MVP. He is leading the Chargers to wins with a revolving door at RB, a disappointing Keenan Allen and has great stats. I have Watt in 2nd (for plays like this previous Sunday by giving the Texans the ball one last time to just have Fitz throw it away). I got Peyton and Rodgers tied for 3rd but will probably leap-frog Watt if the Texans keep losing and can easily end up winning the MVP as well depending on the rest of the season.

With all that said..Watt is a lock for DPOY which shouldn't have as much of an importance on overall W-L albeit still being included in the equation. He's just by far and away the most impressive and influential defensive player in the game..which is magnified even more by the freakish plays he makes even if doubled since they lost Clowney.

The Yay
look, in 2012 jj watt had MORE THAN 20 SACKS (the main glamour stat for defensive players) out of a 3-4 DE role, which is absolutely unheard of. had 16 passes defended, more than a lot of DBs can say after a season. and 4 forced fumbles.

his team won the division and went 12-4

and he STILL didnt even SNIFF the mvp.

chips are stacked up against you if you are a defensive player in this national passing league. if you play defense, NFL wants you to be a poster background for offense

yea thats ridiculous and unfortunate. he probably had more talent around him on defense then than now, foster had a big year and he wasn't known yet (which probably all factored into the voters as well as being on defense in general) but that really is just an absurd season.
