Like if somebody signed with Brooklyn for 5 years 80 mil and then prokolov wired them $20 million through western union. What would happen if they got caught, has it happened before? :mjpls:

first of all.. as an owner, why take the risk of it ever leaking. What if the player gets disgruntled? lol

I wouldnt take that chance

but to answer the question. You'd probably be banned and fined heavily.

Only owners I know that were sent away for awhile was Steinbrenner and Debartalo. I forget why..

let me google

Surprised no owner has done it, especially if they had a contract on avoiding a contract :heh:

What happened?

not really the same concept, but smith was promised a future multimillionaire dollar deal if he resigned for below market value the season before. it was considered tampering. wolves loss 5 first round picks and joe smith in the process. I'd imagine a under the table deal would be even worse, probably sent straight to basketball purgatory

You'd prob end up being levied a big ass fine, lose draft picks and probably lose your team below market value.

Although I've always wondered signing dude to like 10 mill a year, then a ndorsemnt deal for one of your other companies

NBA Fines T-Wolves for Secret Deal - ABC News

NBA commissioner David Stern came down hard on the Minnesota Timberwolves for their secret salary agreement with Joe Smith, taking five first-round draft picks away from the team and fining them $3.5 million.

Possible suspensions for owner Glen Taylor and general manager Kevin McHale have not yet been decided, the NBA said in a statement Wednesday.

The penalty is one of the stiffest in league history and reflects how seriously the NBA considered this offense.

Stern also voided Smith’s contract, making him a free agent.

Losing Larry

Under an arbitrator’s ruling announced Monday, Stern had the right to void Smith’s one-year, $2.5 million contract. Stern went even further, voiding Smith’s last two contracts and thereby stripping Smith of his Larry Bird rights, which would have allowed him to sign a lucrative extension with the Timberwolves next summer.

“They don’t have the ability to do that. They’re definitely trying to rewrite the arbitrator’s ruling,” said Smith’s agent, Dan Fegan.

The NBA also asked the players’ association to “impose appropriate discipline” against Eric Fleisher, Smith’s former agent. A hearing must be held to determine which Timberwolves’ personnel had knowledge of the secret agreement.

Although 28 other teams are free to negotiate with Smith, it seemed he was ready to re-sign with Minnesota if Stern voided his current one-year, $2.5 million contract.

I can't see it happening in the NBA or MLB, but definitely in the NFL where contracts are t guaranteed.

In fact, when Tom Brady took that pay cut earlier this year that was among the first thoughts that came to my mind.

I always wondered why no one has tried that strategy to avoid going over the salary cap or any other penalties. As smart business men, I figured the owners would be able to give the money out without getting caught by giving the wife a job with one of his other businesses and over paying or something to that affect
