Location matters.

But for the sake of argument if we talking about mid metro areas as a barometer, $90,000.

That will have you in a house where you can pay all your bills with one paycheque if you get paid every other week.

Family or single person?
In MD, 120k for a single person. If your take home is around 6k after taxes, health ins, pension etc.
  • Mortgage is 2k.
  • 500 or more on food.
  • 500 or more on car payment /ins/& gas
  • 500 or more for utilities.
  • 500 on discretionary spending.
If you have a girlfriend then subtract another 500 or more.

Assuming no debt, you now have 1500 or less per month for investment/ retirement/ emergencies.

Expenses vary from person to person so as long as money is getting SAVED or invested, i would say that's comfort indicator...basically saying "I dont need to spend this money right now"
Cuz i don't see how you can be comfortable living check to check or whatever even if you make millions....unless no bills

too many factors, mainly location and household size, but I'll be very general and assume you live and spend like the average American

HH size of 1 : $60-$75k
HH size of 2: $125k-$145
HH size of 3: $150k-$200k

this means comfortably. decent neighborhood, kid in daycare, driving cars no older than 7 years old, eating out once or twice a week.
