As a single person, you need to make $150k+ to be comfortable living on your own. Claiming “major city” is irrelevant because costs have homogenized over the past 10 years, regardless of locale. Multiple that income by the number of children you have, if you have children.

Location is important. If you're married with kids, its important.

If you're debt free in rural areas $80k; the city, $100k. With debt in the city $120k. In SF, LA, NY, DC, MIA, Sea, I would say $150k at least.

It depends heavily on where you live. In NJ 90k - 100k is the unofficial floor for middle class in most cities. 150k if your trying to knock down some debt.
