If the goal is to eventually be together, whether months from now or years from now, I'd suggest trying anything to make whatever work in the temporary.
If it's for your son exclusively, an open relationship might damage your dynamic and/or cause tension. Nip it in the butt and figure out a way to be friends. Having parents who are great friends is the best thing you can do for him now and down the road.
If you two still decide to live together, you better clarify that you're not together and never bring s/o's or partners around each other unless it's serious. Respect each other and fukk elsewhere.
