My son is seven and he got asked to play on the team he's on now. Still recreational as I started him on at the YMCA and he excelled there in all the leagues he was in there. Now, he's in a 7-8 year old league that runs games every Monday and every 10 weeks, a new season starts up. They are currently in the midst of their second season being a part of this. Money plus time is what holds a lot of these kids back. My wife and I are able to attend every game. Imagine at 7 years old, having shoes just to hoop in, my son has those. It's just a sunk cost when you get into this. Apps for tracking stats in game, looking at Youtube for various drills and again, the time invested early is key. Sunday afternoon, outside for an hour with him, practicing hesi's, pull back crossovers and bounce passes in the driveway. So far, it's still fun to him. In the meantime, I'm playing the background and not pushing it too much but when we are outside doing our thing, I am pushing him towards the Trey Young like archetype.
Straying away from the point for a second but time and money is what is needed now. Breh, these kids are competing against the world, not just who's on the block now.
