Honestly, and Ipad or Ipod touch isn't a bad gift for a 1 year old... I see little tiny kids using these things all the time... It definitely keeps them occupied... It actually blows my mind to see how advanced some kids are getting..

The question is do you want to spend that much on a 1 year old...

Play telephones or cell phones, I bought the former for my niece's first birthday and she loved it. A gift card where the kid can go pick something out at the store they want is cool but not as personal (which might matter depending on who the kid is to you). Those big block sets are cool. The big tonka trucks are also good plus they have one that comes with blocks hoisted in the back so it's two gifts in one. The kind where you put the ball in and it pops back out. I bought a ball chamber like they have at Chuck E Cheese? You blow it up, it has a slide and the balls in it, it was only a few dollars, too. Activity centers are good like someone posted above and merchandize (basically anything) with their favorite cartoon on it..even if it's just a mini-backpack, pillow, pajamas.
