Detroit You bytch Ass nikka
Im sitting here talkin shyt with my nikka Dobbs bout his music and how he switched up from the punchline/quotable style to more of a riding the beat style. Now me personally, I prefer the quotables but I think there should be a balance between both. I kinda dislike how nikkas like Eminem and Banks just completely abandoned the quotable type of delivery, but I can still fukks wit their current styles. Im telling this nikka to not follow the same route and mix it up cause the 10 or so track going on the next project is pretty much all riding the beat based. Here is some examples

Older shyt 2007

2005

2007 (introspective shyt, love this fukkin track)

2007 (best example)

2013 shyt

Hardest shyt in the city

Meek Mill similarities on here

Single material (clean version "weed, p*ssy, and money")

Thats prob enough to see what I mean. My question to you nikkas is what do you prefer and which do you think has more potential to break mainstream in this current hip hop climate. I want some serious opinions right now cause we sittin here debating on this shyt, I want to know what nikkas elsewhere think. Get at me

Riding the beat is better, your homeboy is painfully generic tho, only thing hes riding is 2 Chainz flow and Rick Ross crab meat

Detroit nikkas supposed to sound like Detroit nikkas

NY nikkas supposed to sound like NY nikkas

MIA nikkas supposed to sound like 1995 Slip N Slide

Theres too much trendhopping, everyone sounds the same. Your boy needs to find his own sound

The best rappers are the ones who can do both (i.e. Enemy Of The State Lupe, Kendrick, old 50)... but if I had to pick I would go with the beat riders. Just makes for more enjoyable music

I agree with "riding the beat is better", but I don't agree with the bolded.
That woulda been the case like 10-15 years ago, but the internet changed that.
nikkas from up here weren't listening to Southern/West Coast shyt back then like that, besides the really popular shyt cuz it wasn't really accessible and vice versa
Nowadays nikkas can download a whole bunch of other shyt, and can be inspired by it.

U right, thats the :flabbynsick: in me. Its a new era.

Still though, w/the access people have and the big library of shyt to draw from, there should be even LESS Mr. Me Toos. I mean look at Max. Hate him or love him you can't say he really sounds like anybody. Sometimes he's a Harlem Nate Dogg, sometimes he's Pac, sometimes he's Eminem from the Infinite era. Is it biting? Maybe, but it's better to combine old things and make something new than to be a store brand so and so. Everybody bites, very few nikkas are 100% original. But when you sound like you are trying to be someone else instead of combining influences

I like both. I'm all about the lyrics but if you can ride the beat crazy you make the whole shyt sound hot

A little bit of both. Too much flow everything starts to run into each other too many quotables youโ€™re bound to start saying something corny or doesnโ€™t make sense

Itโ€™s all about knowing to do it. Jay and Nas have mastered that
