How was he trash? His feud with Cena was interesting, decent in the ring, entertaining on the mic, and could turn all the trash gimmicks they gave him into gold.
They tried everything to sabotage, but he got over with the crowd regardless.

He had a solid match with Cena and with proper booking he easily could be seen as worthy of feuding with those people that you mentioned. The biggest mistake that they made was having him lose the MITB cash in match and randomly dropping his Intellectual Savior gimmick which got him over with the crowd.
