What's holding this gen back is publishers and developers playing it too safe

release games without rediculous overhead (crazy marketing and dev budgets). reel in that shyt.
I don't see how you can realistically cut the dev budget with the amount of work that is needed.

Marketing? Maybe, but the word still needs to be spread out...its not like there are many video game commercials out there anyway.

Use social media and websites that dont' require rediculous kickback. It can be done.

I will have to see how much of the budget marketing actually takes up. I can't see it being THAT large of the pie

dead the used games argument...it's never going to work with retail discs. The last thing you want to do is piss people off and unfortunately the console market is not ready for an all digital solution just yet.

Chapters are a fix...establish a strong base and then expand it on that. Instead of releasing 3 huge titles in a series like BioShock...why not release a strong base game and release 10 shorter DLC's over a generation? That eliminates so much BS starting from scratch 3-4 TIMES and then charging $60 each. I think improvements on graphics are not as important if you can establish a strong base and expand from there...that is more important than anything IMO.

Now problems can arise from this model...for example Arkham Asylum could not turn into Arkham City this way, but that's something that should be thought about at the very start.

I think its easier to get $10-$15 for each DLC pack rather than $60 a pop 3-4x a generation

Plenty of games have used this model, and there's no evidence that it works better. $60 retail games still sell the most.

This definitely wouldn't work for multiplayer games cause your have a community full of people that couldn't play with each other cause they have purchased different "chapters"

since tim schaefer did amnesia fortnights theres really no excuse for chasing these zillion dollar successes, each and every time. i feel like they arent giving us a chance to latch onto new things.

they might find that a game like costume quest might make a zillion if given the attention they give cod

it must be big for these games with ads plastered all over city buses and shyt

the other side is games that do well with little to no promotion/marketing

I like your first idea in the op.

Im surprised more developers havent adopted the walking dead style of releasing episodes.

It would force them to not put out as much bullshyt. Not everyone is talented like that. How many stories do you really remember from gaming out of all of the games you've played. I've play tons and I only recall back to a few. We would have to have credible writing for this to happen.
