It is against the biological makeup of living beings to put the needs of someone who is not in your family ahead of your own.

No one is "selfless" they are choosing to get their own internal esteem from being seen as someone who is. Meaning: someone who is "selfless" is still selfishly acting because of how it makes them feel/look/be seen, etc. They are choosing that "reputation" as their legacy as opposed to a different one: financial etc.

But I'm saying this... Humans have over-evolved. There is no selfish or selfless in the animal kingdom because they don't think about legacy or reputation. People who are "selfless" in the traditional sense, are thinking about how they want to be "remembered" how they want "people to think about them" etc. They think about legacy. They want their legacy/reputation to be a "good person" and it is a selfish thought, just like the thoughts of someone who wants to be remembered as a rich person.

I don't know about every one else but being selfish is the only way to live for me. It depends on your quality of life and the people around you.

A person that doesn't have family and outsiders catering to them and doing things for them would benefit more from being selfish than selfless. Majority of people that have this positive attitude of wanting to help others already have people catering to them so they can afford to worry about other people.

For some people if they don't put themselves first no one else will.

honestly, I think civility started with courting/mating. Once people started to "need" to be civil to mate, things evolved from there. Once it was no longer "I want her, I grab her" "caveman" type of logic, once it became "you need to give me ten cows for her" and then "you need to treat her well", then people began to change their interactions.

Obviously I'm generalizing and I'm not saying it was "better" without civility but I would attest it to that honestly.
