Whats special about Tampa?

Its been coming up a LOT in my life over the last six months. I now know like 5 people who live there, when I didn't know any a year and a half ago. One of my rounds from Inglewood just went on vacation there. I have a former coworker who started a knew job and they had him training there over the summer. And I have a current coworker from Tampa, and another current coworker who just spent Thanksgiving there with his dad and wants to move there next year...

I'm in Raleigh by the way and like most people, I've heard of Orlando and Miami a million times before Tampa, Tampa never really had a brand. But my proximity to all these Tampa plugs recently has me wanting to learn more about it, I kinda wanna go now. Oh, and I recently was put on to this young dude from there who is fire:

I'm not a big Florida guy, never been but my interactions with them over the years had some stuff that made me look at them funny. But Tampa appealing to me, somebody who know about Tampa talk it up for me, give me what its like living black there, the history, the street culture, does it pay well/economy, whats it like in relation to other Fla cities, all of it...

Don't know how to explain it. It has a really great mixture of small city and big city perks. You got a casino,all major concerts stop there, beaches, sports teams, nice suburban homes, nightlife of every variety, fishing,etc.

My sister lives in a suburb of Tampa, visited the area last summer, it's nice but the humidity is



The humidity was my only complaint about the area. Yeah we have humidity up top but it seems 1000 times worse in Florida

Eh. I was out there for my birthday in June. I got there the day the clubs/bars were allowed to be open again. Ybor City was fukking crackin. There is a nice party district and bar scene but it feels like a small city compared to Atlanta, which ain't the biggest city. The deviled crab thing is overrated as shyt.

Nothing is special about it.


The bad:

- Crime rates are pretty bad, usually top 3 worst of any larger city per capita in FL.
- It's expensive (cost of living) compared to other parts of FL (except Miami/Ft. Lauderdale/West Palm).

- Houses are not cheap, not in any of the decent areas to live. Even housing prices in the suburbs around the city are up there.* Property taxes are rough.

- Hurricane season is annoying, even if one doesn't make landfall the weather is usually shytty, there may be intermittent power outages, etc.
- Traffic is bad bc the city is poorly planned and everything is spread out. 275 during rush hour is .

- Weather is a crap shoot, it could be a thunderstorm at 2 and nice and sunny at 3.

*compared to other places in FL, not Cali or NY or some shyt.



The Good:
- Big enough of a city that it has shyt to do: a theme park, concerts/events, pro sports teams, bowl games, etc.
- Poor layout means public transit is a wash. We don't walk or bus or subway, we driving.

- Weather can be nice at times.

- It doesn't snow here.
- Variety of food: Italian, Cuban, Mexican, African, Chinese, BBQ, American, whatever, and the seafood.




Tampa is mid enough that I could live here but not so good that I'd want to retire here.

Qualifications: Lived in Florida over 3 decades. Living in Tampa over 2.

Looks like a cheaper place to live than South Florida with just as much to do and with less people. Better than Orlando cuz it has beaches and less tourists. I've heard decent things about the city as well.
