Y is that there and seemed to be featured prominently during tag team matches. You'll see the camera focus on the wrestler on the apron holding on to the white string from time to time. Why is it there or is there no particular reason?

It's called a Tag Rope. Wrestler has to be holding it to be tagged into the match.

:dwillhuh: have they ever run an angle where a person wasn't holding it when getting tagged and the ref steps in? i never heard of this

It wasn't brought back until like 5 years ago. It was used in the 80s and early 90s. But then they forgot it about it and it didn't matter.

Usually during tag matches when wrestlers stray too far from their corner usually to interfer in the match the referee will usually yell at them to get back in their corner and the wrestler would usually grab the rope to yell at the ref "I'M HERE!" so the rope usually does get attention if the commentators do their job properly and call attention on it which usually they don't.

Watch old WWF matches, the guy always had to hold on to the rope to be tagged in. The announcers used to make a big deal about it too. WWE forgot about it for years, but use it again now.
