I want to have my own home based recording booth that is high quality and works. Any recommendations for the ideal home studio setup?

Depends on your budget and what you may have already, hip-hop can thrive in a barebones environment though. A good daw with plugins, interface, pre-amp and mic can net you what most artist results comparable to what artists are getting played on the radio as the depth is more in the mastering chain compared to the recording/mixing chain. I would recommend subscribing to tape-ops Tape Op Magazine | Longform candid interviews with music producers and audio engineers covering mixing, mastering, recording and music production. it's a free magazine and e-magazine you can at least get your feet wet in understanding the different stages of music production and learn about equipment from industry veterans.

Computer+daw (either FL or Mashine) and any controller with keys and pads. Beyond that it depends on your style but you can almost make anything with this set up. Most of ot depends on your knowledge and skills. You will find a lot of tutorials with these daws on YouTube. As you make more stuff you'll figure out what you need extra

are you just recording or are you producing as well?

IMO, those are two different types of setup.

I plan to record breh. What’s the key differences ?
the type of software you focus on, the type of gear you need. you don't need pads and keys to record, so you can invest in a better mic setup. put more time in to learning that DAW inside and out, and how to maximize the different plugins that are out there.

For a DAW I fukk with either Ableton or Logic. Mostly Ableton lately cuz it's (more) beneficial (to me) on the production side of things as well.

you can get a decent I/o device that has phantom power and a condenser mic for under $200.
I've used MXL, AT, Shure and Rodes mics and they've all been pretty good. You can cop an MXL Condensor for under $100.
MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount
with this
Focusrite Scarlett Solo (2nd Generation) USB Audio Interface

or even something like this seems decent
Focusrite Scarlett Solo Studio Pack (2nd Gen)

A mic stand, a pop filter, and something that will deaden the sound in your room/closet/booth and you will be good to go.

Something like this would work if all you got is an open room
sE Electronics Reflexion Filter X

when it comes to recording, it is just as important to ensure you get a clean sound coming in to the mic as it is to have the right equipment.

you want to make sure the acoustics are sound. no reverb bouncing off the walls, nothing catchin outdoor sounds and shyt.
