No committee would vote in all 3 of those teams in the same year
Maybe not all three, but two of them would have gone through. But I don't remember a specific year that all three were elite at the same time.
NOT ALL conference champions are created equally
for example
Ohio State could win the big 10 by only beating 1 ranked team ALL SEASON in MIchigan State
as opposed to a team like Ole Miss winning the SEC and playing 3 teams in the top 5 plus 9th ranked georgia in the conference title game.
Yeah, but we need to evaluate those rankings at the end of the season. TAMU and South Carolina were highly ranked too early and we saw they weren't that good.

If you put those teams in another conference are they already out of the hunt?

I wouldn't say USCe and A&M are trash, but they were not what the media, well ESPN, cysed them to be.

no 2 teams should be in the top 4 if they've already played each other

To me if you put them in other power 5 conferences they would either flat out win it or finish 2nd.
They can't beat FSU, or probably Oregon but they could both win the big 12 and finish behind FSU and Oregon. In the SEC their like the 5th and 6th best team in the conference.
