My wife's family is going through this current obsession and being disappointed left and right. As Kamikaze said, it's just a fire stick with the Kodi app installed. Incredibly easy to do yourself. The only thing that is complicated is understanding the proper Kodi theme and add-ons to use in order to not bottleneck the firestick. But there are tons of tutorials out there.
