Multi-Level Marketing schemes are notorious for having transferred cultic practices into business organizations. They operate essentially the same without the overarching religious narrative even though the religious fanaticism is still there.

Scientology is a cult.

Yes.

Mormonism is a cult.

Some would even say that Islam is a cult. The largest.

All of these share another cultic pattern. They're dependent on the "say so" or authority of one charismatic leader or founder who disguised their quest for power as "revelation" or spiritual guidance.

people usually just throw cult around to refer to religious movements that they don’t like.

i think of the difference as accessibility of the teaching. like in a religion you can learn about theology and core beliefs for free. in a cult you have to invest a lot financially or socially before they tell you what they really believe

but thats not a dictionary definition, just something i notice when looking at religions and cults

Do yo7 consider jehova witness a cult?
They enforce alot of hardline social obedience and even promote isolation from non followers.

The amount of followers, popularity and clout. Christianity was considered a cult by Jews and Romans. Islam was considered a cult by Christians but now in present day it's socially acceptable to be a follower of those faiths and they're the two biggest religions :yeshrug:

to be honest i dont know a lot about them, other than that they are very aggressive about trying to get people to join and that they have a lot of different beliefs than mainstream Christianity. so im not sure how much you have to pay to learn about their religion. if you can find out any information about their beliefs without joining (and i dont mean like in the scientology way where it has been leaked and the church actively denies what they really believe in) i probably wouldn’t think of it as one

but i also think a religious movement can still be really dangerous and manipulating even if it is not a cult

in the church you pay afterwards ... after you start. like a classy restaurant. all classier like.

classy.

cults charge you before your eat. like in mickey D's which is so so sooooo low class.

yes it is.

discomunication.
mantras.
coded language.
us and them thinking.
selected learning materials.
men as leaders.
ever changing doctrine.
downplaying of secular education.
turn a blind eye to social issues.
constant impending end of the world pressure.
narcissistic appeal to specialness.
avoids teaching critical thinking.
lies to followers about oraganisational secular matters.
lies to state about criminal matters.

and yet for all their specialness none of them can explain a simple question like why animals have to suffer. or why people have differing iq's.
