One thing about network/cable pre-streaming and TiVo was there were tv-based collective cultural experiences. Everyone would watch a thing at the same time and that would be what people talked about the next day. Like when Michael Jackson would drop music video premieres during prime time.
Nothing lasts forever. If you love the theater you can lament that fact that even poor folk went to see live theater performances before television and film took off.

Most of the shyt people reminisce about you can still do but people don’t actually want to do them they just like feeling nostalgic . You can still go to Walmart and pick up a random Blu-ray if that’s really what you wanted to do :mjlol:

Mainly because their lives haven't progressed much.

I know ppl who are like that.....always reminiscing.

The beauty of getting older is that you can always learn new things.

Chappelle's show Wednesday nights. I would record that for everyone that couldn't and watch it at school the next day

The blockbuster nostalgia has more to do with the experience/feeling rather than the product/service that they offered. Shyt is core memories for me. I used to love going there as a kid every Friday night with my bro and pops and he'll only let us get one movie/game for the weekend. Same way I used to love biking to tower records and listening to new music at those listening stations.

It’s caused a rise in social anxiety that’s for sure. I’m sure people were a bit nervous when you had to go out and interact but you kind of just shook it off but with the rise of convenience culture you literally can have everything delivered to you and not speak to a single person.

That has to rewire your brain somehow I’m certain and not for the better.

They've actually managed to look back fondly on Dubya Bush. :damn:

If you lived in the 2000s, you would know how insane and surreal that is.
I would have bet everything I own that there would never be a President worse than George W Bush.

And not even a decade later we saw Donald Trump.

So only by comparison can I see “nostalgia” for W.

Playing retro games. The only NES game I am willing to play is Supet Mario 3. Anything else from that era/system
:camby:
I’ve done a recent run on Final Fantasy 3. I enjoyed.
:ehh:
Beyond that, N64/Playstation2/Dreamcast is as far as I would go back and even that is game specific. N64 for the wrestling only. I don’t think I can enjoy Golden Eye if I played it today. Dreamcast for Shenmue only the rest of the era
:camby:

Don't sleep on the SNES/Genesis. The best SNES games are still fun to this day. (Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, DKC2, Contra 3, Turtles in Time, Zelda, Final Fantasy 6, ActRaiser, Mega Man X, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Yoshi’s Island, Super Castlevania, Mario RPG, etc.)

And the OG Sonic trilogy + Knuckles on Genesis:banderas:
Gunstar Heroes :wow:
Streets of Rage 2 :whew:
Shining Force 2 :gladbron:

I agree that most early 3D games from PS1/N64 era aged poorly though, except for the obvious classics (Mario 64, Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, Symphony of the Night, Suikoden 2, FF Tactics.)

People dont miss Blockbusters per se, otherwise it would have never gone under. People miss the time it represented. People miss the excitement that it played a part in on Friday nights.

The most baffling nostalgia for me is nostalgia for times and things that you werent around for. It happens in sports a lot with folks romanticizing eras and players from 10 years before they were born. Also happens a lot with relationship talk. People romanticize relationship dynamic from their grandparents time that they couldnt possibly understand in full.

Well aware that it's a result of not just Trump but the Republican party as a whole getting exponentially worse. That doesn't change the fact that the fond light people shine on W now isn't insane.

2 Wars that lasted over a decade, a tremendous death toll, shifting geopolitical alignments from the foreseeable future, international shame that literally became encapsulated with an attendee throwing shoes at a sitting President during a conference.

And at home? People talk about Trump hooping paper towels at victims, W presided over the absolute disaster that was Katrina and FEMA. Displaced minority populations within the continental US off the strenff of incompetence and callousness. Flipped the economy and plunged us into despair while cutting corporations a bigger check.

Not even mentioning his VP, the mastermind that was literally out here "accidentally" shooting MFs that pissed him off during hunting trips.

And this is when the Party was SANE compared to now. Personally, I can hate on 2 fuccking idiots at once.
