It was originally designed with a psychological component in mind to find people that might be more prone to criminality. It's complete bullshyt for the most part.

There are genetic attributes that affect how we all look, but to say there are three distinct bodytypes is silly. When bulked up to 202 pounds people would say "he's an endomorph" If you saw me now at almost 160 pounds, lean and defined, you'd say, "Oh, he's an ectomorph."

Individual genetic differences, diet, exercise, age, etc. Those are what define how we look. I think somatotypes are just very misleading and contribute to ignorance about fitness and exercise.

I don't agree with you on the rest though. Like you said, diet and exercise define how you look, along with genetics. And somatotypes are just descriptors of groups of people with similar genetics (which are still not exact at all).

Yes you can fall in between categories, but no your body structure can't change, you can't jump, at all.


The whole theory is about the basic frame of a body and the connection to how that translates into the ability to gain/hold muscle and fat. Not about how muscular/lean you look at a certain point in time.

Or at least that's where its usefulness lies, as far as that goes. You can't change your body structure so at best you can tune your diet and exercise to your body type, but since it's not exact you still wont know what works until you try it.

It's completely useless. You cannot change your muscle insertions, limb lengths, where you store fat, etc.

But we are all human we've studied the human body for a long, long time. Exercise science is all about that.

There is a reason why most people that subscribe to this tend to know very little about exercise science in general. I'm no genius, but I can tell you that somatotypes are plain and simple nonsense based on what most reputable people in that field will say.

Mesomorph Im naturally lean and have great toned muscle without even frying
Meso for guys is the equivalent of how some girls hold they thickness perfectly

I gained like 20 pounds a while back when I started dating my girl cause she cook a lot & everyone thought I was lifting :dahell: still had my abs :wow:

When I started lifting tho? Forget about it :banderas:

OK, I'm just looking at it from the fitness standpoint obviously.

And even then I agree it's almost completely useless. Like I said, I just see it as a description of body structures.

I'm just against obliviously writing off older theories in favour of new "scientifically proven" theories, because a lot of people tend to just assume newer is better and not even look at the studies critically. With all studies you have to really find out what to take out of them. Take the results out of context and it's useless too. For example nowadays everyone seems to think meal timing is completely irrelevant. Well, it still isn't (I've read the studies, people take the conclusions and apply it to other situations).

For regular folks (as in not top tier athletes) it's not that deep anyway, know what you're doing with exercise and diet and reap the benefits. :yeshrug:
