I got tired of Mortal Kombat around the time they started dropping MK games back to back like Ultimate MK3, Mk Trilogy, & MK4. A 5 year break was needed after MK4.

MK (the SNES version was just a shockingly bad port but still fun for all it's worth).
For nostalgia reasons MK II gets the tip but to be honest gameplay-wise MK9 past or present is the most true to the original trilogy. MK9 is essentially a polished MK II like how SFIV was a polished version of SFII.
