Is it possible that people are mostly “good”, which allows a minority of corrupt and horrible people to rise to the top?

I suppose. Particularly in terms of brute force. But looking at modern democracy, the level of indifference suggests people are only as good as their self-interests.

I would define someone as good if they are doing good themselves wherever possible. That includes fighting injustices and those proliferating injustices.

Evil tends to amass power when perceived good people couldn't be bothered.

We see it time and time again with the rise and fall of fascism.

Song lyrics that always resonated with me:
"A child is born with a heart of gold, the way of the world makes his heart so cold . . . "

What about life/growing old causes trauma? Is it just the imperfection of humanity? Even with the best of intentions human interactions can have very negative consequences on people.

I voted mostly good because there would be no communities or groups with similar interests or fun times and festivities or charities or memories of sharing love with family and friends. As times go on, from my perspective, hearts do tend to get colder from negative things that have occurred, leading us to be more skeptical and distrusting. History of racism, domestic violence, victims of robbery, etc. where selfish acts have caused harm creates a sort of anxiety and cautiousness when interacting with others. But we still tend to look for the good in one another, we expect it.

Sadly viewing people as good when they aren't is also a self-interested survival mechanism.
To add on, people aren't good for the sake of it, but more so that it's to their own benefit. (Ie the whole mantra be good to others and they'll be good to you).

Humans first thought is to lump others over the head and forcefully take what isn't theirs. It's only the fear of reprisal that motivates us to consider cooperation for the long term benefits.
