What's Your Opinion On Standardized Testing?

So I was at some friends house and I asked one of their roommate's about their opinion on Standardized Testing (SAT, ACT, WASL, etc), he responded by saying that it's bullshyt, my other friend, who is a teacher agreed, and so did their other roommate, who happens to be a teacher as well. I argued against them, but that was only to get them to go more in-depth. I think that it's stupid, but at the same time I understand that it is there to show ones work ethic, rather than measuring their intelligence.

In a nutshell their argument was: Standardized Testing is in fact used to measure the intelligence of an individual, and rather than taking into consideration factors such as Test Anxiety, they ignore it.

Also, they feel as if standardized testing test's you on information that is irrelevant when it comes to gearing one towards success. Their solution to ridding schools of standardized testing was to simply ask one's teacher if the student was ready for college or not (I called that unrealistic, but whatevs).

Not a fan of them in those formats. We shouldn't be using whether or not someone can recall x amount of math problems they've encountered over the duration of their academic career and/or their vocabulary as a device to determine whether or not they're capable to get to the next level. Too many variables in that. I've taken exams for state/city jobs that are much more realistic in the standardized testing sphere and would give a much better indication of how capable someone is, work ethic wise and otherwise, versus how well people can remember/retain shyt.

fukks over teachers, students and public schools.

It's a lazy way to judge education and the educators because it doesn't take in account any factors. No child left behind is as big of a problem but the schools need a total overhaul.

We've been able to use our notes on every test this year but for the big test you just gotta remember.

They stunt any real growth in the class room.
They take away the learning portion of an education and replace it with mindless memorization so the school gets good ratings/more funding.
Standardized testing is bullshyt and needs to be thrown out ASAP.

if u do not know your ABC's and 123's by the time you go to preschool then your parents did not do their job. Your mom should have video or audio of you speaking perfect diction as a toddler.

Just excel. You're competing in the United Snakes. Make the most of it. Stop allowing your snot nose'd cousins not make a proper sentence, without you checking him.

I don't have a problem with it. You need standardized tests to objectively measure things. Subjective measurement is far too prone to corruption. I think the problem most people here have with standardized testing is how it is implemented in particular circumstances, not with standardized testing as a concept.

They are a necessary evil. How else are you going to compare students? High school in Rural Texas is different than in a big city, some schools are easier than others, some schools have a 5.0 GPA, etc.

We need the standardized tests, to well... standardize.
