In a historical sense when did bonnets became used by Black people to begin with? :patrice: I seen old slave pictures of folks wearing headwraps but my Nigerian grandmothers never mentioned it as something they used growing up

Who are we trying to look good for?
How about for OURSELVES? :mjtf: To be taken more seriously in the eyes of members of our community? Which would then aid in fostering a stronger sense of union within said community?
Yea, the NOI wears suits but where has that got them?
Not big fan of the NOI, but they understood the importance of APPEARANCE. In my younger years, I gave MLK flack for his submissiveness compared to Malcolm X, but both he and Malcolm knew the importance of appearance. Both men were taken down by the FBI, but their optics made the government take both of them SERIOUSLY.
They will always look down on us
True. But with that being the case, why give them more shyt to use against us by reinforcing and feeding into the same damaging stereotypes that they THEMSELVES made up to dehumanize us. Why? Out of some misplaced form of rebellion? What's rebellious about emulating the lies that your oppressor told you and others about yourself before you were a preteen? :sas2:

We're not a monolith, though. Even an ADOS with 0 European admixture has several different African tribes in their blood. And those tribes were killing each other before they ever saw a straight haired CAC. If we weren't united in Africa (where they're still having civil war), what makes you think we're supposed to be magically united just cause we all went through slavery? Even during the American Civil War, ADOS were killing ADOS. A bonnet ain't shyt in the scheme of things.

Was the black restaurant owner who banned twerking in his establishment conforming to “white gaze”?
I do think there were issues with the owner and the women that honestly will never be productively discussed online with folks in the convo that may be white, foreign or just self haters:manny:
Some of them cats were hot about that subject:bryan:one of the posters in that thread said my dead grandma was a hoe because of my opinions on the matter :dead:

I agree.

I don't expect us to be "united" in some sort of Disney, fairy-tale sense, but goddamn how about at least half of the time? Asians beef with each other outside of the U.S. all the time especially against the darker, southeast ones, but once that "Stop Asian Hate" thing trended, they banded together en masse.

Facts. Unfortunately, those people were afforded the privilege of coming here with money which therefore granted them political power off rip that we have to fight tooth and nail for.

Which is made easier (albeit, slightly) when a group controls their image and thus only allows themselves to be shown in an overall positive light, e.g. "positive" propaganda. Notice how each form of American media was used to denigrate us for generations since abolition (film, theatre, television, music, radio, etc) to the point that today some random rice farmer from rural India can probably name five Black stereotypes off the top of his head.

MONEY attracts initial interest, and IMAGE seals the deal. Asians may have the money, but they also have the image (the stereotypes of being hard-working, studious, intelligent, etc).

A group that does not retain tight control over its public perception is doomed to public opinion.
