He did both, it's usually an escalation, you hang around with smokers and fiends long enough, you'll end up tying off a vein. BG himself references it on a few tracks, mostly around 2004, including 'Don't Talk To Me'

Haha, I never read 'Dope Fiend', but the power of literature to influence a young mind is fascinating....I did read 'The Basketball Diaries', about age 13, which repulsed me, and shook me up, and 'Requiem For a Dream', as well as a dozen other books about heroin, I never did that, though I did a lot of coke for years as a kid. Friends of mine went another way.
