A driver and passenger were killed when two vehicles crashed in Gaithersburg Wednesday night, Montgomery County police said.
Around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 40-year-old Heriberto Santos Gonzalez, of Gaithersburg, was driving a 2001 Honda Accord south on Muddy Branch Road and tried to turn left onto West Deer Park Road, police said in a press release. Gonzalez’s vehicle struck a 2020 Toyota Supra that was traveling north on Muddy Branch Road, police said.
Stephanie Angelica Vasquez, 25, of Kensington, who was driving the Supra, and passenger Jonathan Charkas, 35, of Rockville, died at the scene, police said.
Gonzalez and two passengers in the Accord were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.
Police said they think the speed of the Supra might have been a factor in the crash.
Police had written on Twitter Wednesday that night two people died in the crash but did not release the names of the victims or provide any additional information.
Two cars — one white and one yellow — were at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Muddy Branch and West Deer Park Roads. The yellow vehicle was pressed against a light pole.

More debris from the crash was several yards away on Muddy Branch Road.
Police were on the scene and had blocked off the road with yellow caution tape.
Dozens of people stood on the sidewalk along Muddy Branch Road to watch as police investigated and interviewed witnesses. Several people who live in nearby apartment complexes said they saw or heard the crash from their homes.
The crash remains under investigation, police said.
