Brace yourself, Saquon Barkley is comingThe lack of star running backs hurts.QBs are fun and all, but highlight reel runs help make the game exciting. The early 00s had so many very good backs and less of a focus on QBs
Something I've pondered recently because of analytics, rule changes QB's who where mediocre in the past like Dilfer (Ravens) Johnson(Bucs) would thrive in this short passing era because that's all their teams wanted them to do back then, the short passing game was seen as a bend but don't break offense if you weren't all ready running west coast.
the talent isn't weak, the NFL just doesn't know how to promote anyone not playing QB, they don't know how to build stars. the focus on QB's (which hasn't even worked as most QB's aren't even stars - Brady, P. Manning, and Rodgers/Newton/Brees to an extent are the only QBs to reach household name status) while not paying or promoting players at other positions thwarts recognition of their talent and ability to crossover into mainstream/household stardom.
a complete non-sports fan like my mom probably can't name anyone in the NFL right now aside from brady, yet she could at minimum name 10 NBA players and try to watch a game just because of them. the NFL is also missing the memo on how big personality driven stardom is for 30 and unders - think of all the non talented reality tv/social media personalities that have become pop culture lexicon simply because of their personality and followings. the NFL should be doing more to promote interesting players vs trying to assimilate them.
It doesn't have to be mutually exclusive, the NFL had stars just a decade ago before they went full on team before player. And the local team is the niners - good luck to her on thatIt's a team driven league more so then a star driven. People are really only down for their hometown. They're really aiming to take advantage of peoples civic pride (hence the salary cap and drafting order to avoid a Cleveland vs golden state situation like the NBA)
Your mom can probably name stars on the local team.
and raiders - where while she knows marshawn lynch just cuz he's from Oakland, she'd have no clue he currently plays for Oakland
The talent in the NFL is just weak. There are simply not as many great players as there used to be.

Cant believe I'm agreeing with you.
But yeah, the lack of superstar talent is hurting the league. There's not many guys who are just flat out physically better and dominant at their positions. No prime Randy Moss. No prime Adrian Peterson. Prime Vick. Even dudes like JJWatt were only good for a few yrs. Those were must watch players. But now Paying qbs like Cousins superstar money....nah
You can fool the younger ppl into thinking "oh, its the NFL, you have to watch", but the long term fans see the difference and how the game has changed.
The schemes now are to hide the weaknesses and play it safe rather than to chances and play to a strength.
Just boring
