When did Achievements/ Trophies become a suitable replacement for "Codes"?

Now that I finally got past the 15 post limit:

Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Left, Right, Right
Up, C, Down, C, Left, C, Right, C

WTF are Trophies and Achievements and what does that give me? I do realize that most DLC takes the form of cheat content but still, I remember trying to do the cheat for Shadow Lady on Marvel Vs Capcom. Are there games that still do this?

when games got so easy you didint need codes anymore, most games are very very beatable today

Being able to save all the time actually took away the need for alot of cheat codes.
Took away from game difficulty too.

Trophies and achievements aren't intended to be a replacement for cheat codes. Why would you think they were?

Trophies/achievements are intended to instigate social interactions based around the game/console so a) you'll keep playing the game/console so you can show off how good you are at it. The more you play the machine the more likely you are to continue to spend your money on it via games, accessories, or getting suckered in by the ads on the dashboard, etc.

And b), so your friends may be more inclined to buy the same game on the same platform as you, and even perhaps the same console just off the strength that their friends have it.

etcetera, etcetera, so on and so forth.

Cheats are for you incapable motherfukkers.

Dont underestimate the power of the start button breh.
Press that shyt in the middle of a combo or during a jumpshot against your people and see how effective it is.

I'm going mainly off of Gamefaqs. For example

I don't mean cheats solely to get a head but cheats as far as content. Like Tony Hawk had big head mode, or the sonic whistles and moving the joystick really fast to get shadow lady. Games don't seem to have that any more.
