Once ESPN bought into the NFL, but I really want to say once Madden started to become popular. People only care about baseball in Oct. Plus football makes it a point to stay relevant year round. Combines, draft, trades, free agency. mini camps, preseason.

Marketable Black stars, following your favorite players from college to the pros.

They stick baseball players in AAA for half of their peak years.

When FOX start showing games in the early 90's is when everything changed. More games was shown every week with FOX, ABC, and CBS

the games were on tv before Fox.

CBS had the NFC and NBC had the AFC...MNF was on ABC

the 1994 baseball strike, imo

Yup;

It was a combo of:

Baseball strike
Basketball in flux (mj retires, etc)
The biggest fanbases in the nfl (cowboys, skins, nyg, pack, 9ers) all clicking at once
Expansion in smart markets

Hockey actually got a surge here too but they shyt the bed worse than baseball did. Give zero credit to espn, they didn't have their shyt together then, at all.

Baseball Strike. NFL wasn't even big like that in the 80's. There was a time the Oakland Athletics were the most popular ball team no lie.

Before the mid 1990's NFL was was number 2, maybe 3 in some places.
