id say it's way before you guys are thinking, easily way before the 90s, the 70s had the steelers and cowboys ; the 80s had the giants, 49ers, etc...

the 60s had all those great packer teams.. the NFL has been king for a long time

Combo of both. The NFL draft, fantasy and players got more and more popular over the years. This wasn't a coincidence. The NFL knows how to market itself and it's stars.

CBA and Free Agency:

the Collective Bargaining Agreement and Free Agency were a great catalyst in helping the NFL become king of sports in the U.S. - this of course helped bring more parity to the league and stars were able to move to different markets thus creating more interest.

Trip made a good ass point. Fantasy football becoming a household thing gave NFL Football a huuuuuge push in popularity, IMO. Made every game played interesting to people, no matter their team or geographic allegiance.
