It's partly, and mostly an act for the records, there is an high entertainment value in conflict and tension, that comes from that image, but as always, in rap, (as we have historically seen, again and again) and the rest of the world, there is a real danger in that. A friend basically lost his life for that, not to say he was a fake gangster, or a punk, but he didn't need to be running with the kinds of people he was, or repping that life, to one degree or another. And when people came for his friends, they got him. He wasn't even 24 years old.

And your ego is turned on by the violence and danger, and you start to get off on the image and tension.
