I know the general consensus is when he dropped The New Danger album but even, when the music wasn’t what many wanted to hear(True Magic album), he still was in good movies (Something The Lord Made, The Italian Job, Be Kind Rewind, Cadillac Records)

So when do you think things fell apart for him?

IMO, it was around the time of his move to South Africa. I think that's when he stopped dropping albums, and his acting roles slowed down.

The work definitely slowed down once he moved to South Africa then once he was getting kicked out, he made that announcement that he was retiring from both the music industry and entertainment industry

:wow:

I love True Magic...

Same here

Fake Bonanza, Lifetime and There Is A Way are among my favorite songs off True Magic

Sh*t, to be honest, probably right after BOBS.

We were lucky to get The Ecstatic. But it wasn't like he was on a run at the time. After the first album, Mos pretty much lost his damn mind and got off track with the focus. He's reached that point where I'm not sure any amount of music can redeem his legacy. He really f*cked the whole sh*t up.

Yeah when you look back, it definitely seems more clearer than ever how he slipped, tripped and stumbled post BOBS

The Ecstatic was a miracle and the more I listen to that album, the more I hear DOOM’s influence on him on that particular album.

Yup. It was almost like he had too much going on; music, movies and then hosting Def Poetry Jam.

I think it's ego too.

He was always highly celebrated in the early days. He pretty much walked in and was hanging with legends since day one. He might've had the accolades too soon, and that killed his motivation and focus. People crowned him out the gate.

Yeah a lot of early success that then inflated his ego and had him on cloud 9 before he had really even hit his stride as an artist

I just remember where it was the an award show (Essence awards) and they gave him a Lifetime Achievement award or something and this was like 2003 lol

Let me see if I can find it

Edit here it is lol

Mos Def definitely took off in acting when the rap climate was changing…

His second and third albums were so slept on during the era of Lil Jon and Jazze Pha. Kanye was just getting some steam too but that couldn’t save him

It didn’t really help that Rawkus shut down too.

At least Talib held it down while Mos Def was on vacation. Eardrum was one of my favorite albums from that year. I remember playing that on a burnt CD on my stereo.

It’s funny how he spent more time on that toilet than making albums.

True Magic was a better album to me than The New Danger.

I liked how he redid Nolia
Clap and Liquid Swords…

I know Mos probably had no issues clearing those samples
