It was common practice in African kingdoms to chop the head off of dead enemies and put them on spikes in front of the entrance to the kings/queens palace. Not just Africa but similar actions happened all throughout the ancient world. People having been mocking their dead enemies since the dawn of humanity.

It wasn't for the purpose of mockery. It was a warning to anyone who might think about trying something. In essence it wasn't even about the dead enemy or to spite the living. It was to put fear in the hearts of potential enemies.
